Can the IMA help me to apply for a DRO?
Although we are a competent authority for DRO intermediaries, the IMA cannot itself give advice. A DRO might be an option for you but, in order to apply for one, you will need to first get advice and have your application completed by an approved intermediary.
For more information about the IMA’s role as a competent authority, please contact us on 0113 242 0048 or at firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note we are unable to give advice or refer you directly to a DRO intermediary.
How do I find an adviser or approved intermediary?
You can visit gov.uk to find information on free debt advice agencies, or you can web search the term ‘Free Debt or Money Advice in …. (your area)’ but please beware that this search may turn up loan companies or companies who charge for their services.
Once you have located a local or national free debt adviser, they should be able to help you in one of two ways. Either they will be an approved intermediary themselves and will be able to complete a DRO application for you, or they will be able to research and signpost you to other local agencies which are able to provide an approved intermediary to make an application for you.
Alternatively, you can refer to the Insolvency Service website for information on the other competent authorities. Other than the £90 fee, you cannot be charged for being advised on or applying for a DRO.
